Waiting for food at the restaurant Kathy: Hakka means "guest people". There were something like five migrations of Hakka to Taiwan over thousands of years. Morley: Where did the Hakka originally come from? Kathy: Around Hubei. Eventually, they went south to Canton. Morley: It's surprising they didn't just disappear through intermarriage then. Kathy: True, since Hakkas have always been a society apart. We only really started marrying outsiders in the last hundred years or so.

There are 70,000 pubs in England and Wales and several thousand more in Scotland. Every country has its drinking shop, but none has an institution quite like the British pub. The essence of a good pub (which modern buildings hardly ever achieve) is a feeling of intimacy. It must have nooks and crannies, corners and snugs, where conversations and assignations can take place without the whole world listening in.
